Sally's Fiddle Class is a weekly group lesson for 4-6 year olds, and their grownups!

Groups are capped at 5 students maximum. Parent's are encouraged to learn along with their children, but this is also not required.

I use teach using a combination of Suzuki method and traditional fiddling experience, emphasizing learning by ear. There will be no annotated music. It is for students who are interested but have no experience. Goals will be: proper holding of the instrument, being able to play each open string with good tone, learning basic bowing techniques, learning where to place your fingers on the fretboard. Simple traditional tunes will be used to teach bowing and fingering. Bowing is emphasized above fingering. Dancing to traditional fiddle music will also be part of the curriculum!

$120 for 6 classes

Starts in January 2026, dates and location TBD.

Requirements: each student will need one child’s size violin (find the appropriate size here!), a bow, a case, and rosin. If a grown-up wants to learn along with, they will also need an adult size violin, bow, case, and rosin. Shoulder rests are encouraged but not required.

It is also very helpful if a parent in the child’s home can help tune the violin. This can be aided by a tuner, or there are free tuning apps for your phone.

About me:
Sally Anne Morgan learned the Suzuki method of violin starting at age 4, and played in school orchestras until aged 14, when she became more interested in traditional music. Now she is an accomplished old-time fiddler steeped in the traditional music of Madison County and the Appalachian Mountains, as well as an experimental musician. She taught at the Jackson County JAM program from 2016-2017.
